Many programs that are titled as a master's degree in English also offer the above topics as program concentrations. Students also complete general education courses in a foreign language, the natural and social sciences, and the humanities to obtain a well-rounded education. Standards for admission to the BFA program are high. In preparation students take two introductory writing classes which focus on intensive reading, critical essay and basic craft knowledge of creative writing.
Students admitted to the BFA program take junior- and senior-level workshops which focus on extensive writing and revision, refinement of craft and definition of artistic goals.
The BFA thesis, a formal compilation of creative work, is required of each senior. The thesis is also presented in a public reading. Literature Bachelor of Arts College of Arts and Sciences The study of English literature introduces students to a rich variety of texts and to the aesthetic, historical, social, cultural, political, economic, ethical and philosophical contexts in which they develop.
Literary studies also help students develop skills in written and oral communication, research techniques, critical thinking and problem-solving. Career possibilities are not limited to teaching or graduate school, although these are still popular and rewarding options. English majors are qualified for positions in law, government, business, publishing, advertising and library work.
Many English majors choose a dual major or minor. By completing courses in scientific and technical communication, computer science, business, journalism, telecommunication, pre-law or technology, graduates strengthen communication skills and practical knowledge.
Integrated Language Arts Bachelor of Science-integrated Language Arts College of Education and Human Development Formerly English Education, the integrated language arts major leads to licensure in secondary education and focuses on teaching secondary language arts.
The degree is granted through the College of Education and Human Development, but offers cooperative courses in English language arts and education. A strong emphasis is placed on the English content area and the area of professional educational development. Students also have the opportunity to select a course of study in theatre, interpersonal communication, journalism, writing or literature.
Scientific and Technical Communication Bachelor of Arts or Bachelor of Science College of Arts and Sciences Technical communicators interpret specialized information, and clearly and accurately convey scientific material to their readers for practical use.
A technical communicator creates brochures, research reports, manuals, instructions, news stories, scripts and speeches. Although technical communicators are not expected to be scientists or engineers, they need to have a strong background in at least one technical, scientific or business area.
Technical communication is a growing profession needed in all industries, and technical communicators are in national demand. Students network with working communicators and graduate students in the technical communication graduate program. In addition, students have opportunities to attend and present at local, regional and international conferences.
Preparation for College Completing the requirements for high school graduation is necessary for admission to BGSU, but only finishing the minimum coursework will leave you unprepared for college. Consider taking four years of mathematics instead of the three that are required.
Two, three or even four years of the same foreign language is excellent for preparation for college. You will also benefit from competency in computer use.
